We got here because it refused to generate images of white people even when specifically prompted. i.e. Gemini would respond to the prompt "white family" with "Sorry that is racist, here is a diverse family instead". So people got creative and started prompting "historically accurate viking" etc, and receiving only black looking vikings. Then a genius came up with "1940s German soldier" and here we are.
