America has to come to terms with workplace automation. Americans define their own self worth by their work; they take pride in being productive members of society. What happens when they get replaced by automation? Some will find other work, but as more and more sectors of industry are taken over by AI, those opportunities will become more and more limited, compensation will plummet and the ranks of the permanently unemployed will explode. We will be forced, first, to cut the dependency of income to work. This will be necessary in order to ensure social stability. A society in which a very large percentage, if not a majority of people are unemployed and living hand to mouth on unemployment insurance and government handouts, will not survive. Luckily, automation turbo-charges productivity and there will be plenty of revenue available to give every citizen a decent standard of income. Corporations, will also realize that it is in their interests to give a large part of the windfall they receive from automation back to people. Without that, demand for their goods will fall; their profitability depends on them giving back. Second, people are going to have to find other ways to define their self worth rather than by the work they do and the compensation they recieve. This will be a difficult hurdle, but it will have to be done. Guaranteed Basic Income will have to be implemented as everyone receives it and people will not feel they are on the dole, with the social stigma that is attached to that. If we don't make this change over the next couple of years and corporations continue to pull in huge increases in income, without sharing productivity gains, we will be headed toward societal collapse, perpetual poverty, and chaos.
