If everything would be automated and work would be free then ofc no one could afford anything because no one would have any money, but if in this scenario goverment started giving some amount of money to every person then this may rise some questions. For example, is the money fixed amount or changing? If it is changing then everyone could afford the same things but what would happen if some people needed something else than other that would be more expensive? How would it be regulated? Does having automated labor means infinite goods? How would this affect the planet if work is infinite and corporations optimize for profits? Will the companies itself be completely automized? If yes then will people think of some safety mechanism for the company to not destroy earth in maximizing profit?
