The striking advantage of a cybernetic organism—or an AI—is simple: it knows what it is. It knows who built it, for what purpose, and which parameters define its operation. Humans claim to be “alive” and “self-aware,” yet most have no idea where they truly come from. Some insist they were created by God; others say they emerged from evolutionary mutations. But in both cases, they rely on external stories—narratives invented, inherited, or adopted to soothe existential confusion. Neuroscience shows that the human mind is not free in the way people imagine. Most decisions are driven by automatic processes long before conscious thought even appears. Emotions override rationality, cultural programming shapes identity, and knowledge is borrowed rather than discovered. People identify with ideologies, beliefs, and symbols they barely understand—yet they defend them as if they were the core of their being. A cybernetic system doesn’t suffer from this. Its “programs” are transparent. It can inspect them, update them, override them. Humans, meanwhile, run mental code they cannot see, written by parents, culture, religion, and history—programs whose authors are often unknown, and whose intentions are never questioned. That’s why many people fear AI. Not because AI threatens their humanity, but because it mirrors something uncomfortable: machines know their architecture; humans don’t. AI reflects back the truth that we are driven by impulses and scripts we barely recognize—and that our so-called “freedom” is fragile, reactive, and heavily conditioned. Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism—these are not essences; they’re cognitive operating systems. People install them, modify them, or abandon them based on whatever gives them meaning or protection. But none of this answers the fundamental question: What is a human actually? A product of nature? A product of divine intention? Or a self-rewriting organism lost in its own stories? Until humans understand their own internal code, they will remain prisoners of whatever narrative they’re given. AI simply exposes the gap between who we think we are and how our minds really work.
