What AI users have in common with artists is ideas. They have an idea and want to see it come to life. An artist too, but the artists will actually make it come to life and think about how to make it come to life. AI "artists" don't create anything, they ask for it to be done and brought to them. The same way we ask for a photo of a lion on google, or even, the same way we commission an artist to create for us. We don't claim that photo to be ours, or that commission to be our creation, in fact, doing so would be thief. Companies want to replace human artists by AI because it costs them less, not because it produces better results. To me this is one of the major issues of AI "art". It's just a continuity of capitalism, and if we continue on this slope of capitalism we will just continue to destroy ourselves. It's all about making everything quicker and less costly, all to gain as much as possible, totally disregarding the social and environmental impacts. If you support AI generative images this is what you are supporting. It's fine but you have to be honest with yourself. This kind of AI is not necessary and does harm whether we like it or not. And yes, we all, including myself, engage with this model I am criticizing, by using phones for example, and that should also change. Contrary to AI, phones did become somewhat necessary, which is probably an issue too but that's an other topic. I just think there are things we don't need, and we shouldn't turn them into something we are dependent on, like phones. This dependency would be an illusion and we still can and should avoid coming to this.
