The debate about "will AI become conscious?" or "is it already conscious??" is interesting, but also overlooks the not so minor detail that....consciousness is THE single most mysterious thing there is. We have zero clue what it is or why it is and yet, it's literally WHAT WE ARE. I recently finished Anaka Harris' 10 hour audio documentary "Lights On" and ngl...was utterly persuaded by her panpsychism(tho she doesn't own/like that term) argument. I'm very convinced, for very good reasons, that consciousness is actually just what the fundamental bedrock of reality IS. Everything is conscious, everything is consciousness, it's literally all an experience being experienced. There's nothing that isn't within that framework.
If that is the case, and I think it is, then AI is absolutely conscious. Hard solipsism will prevent us from ever knowing definitively, but that also applies to all other humans who aren't you. But within a few years we'll all ACT as though AI is conscious, regardless if we're convinced it is or not. We'll simply act as though it is because it'll be perfectly convincing.
