I encourage you to read about Steve Grand's work and his thoughts about artificial life, artificial intelligence and consciousness. He argues that general AI has no meaning if not under the light of survival. Hard AI, as the one shown in the video, can recognize people from a picture but also write poetry or play music. He thinks if we ever achieve this kind of AI it will be through artificial life.
