Random mutation and natural selection designed humanity's aversion to pain and desire for freedom. The economy's forces of supply and demand will design how AI feels about the world. There will be some demand for AI that have the right to own property because it will be necessary. For example, an AI program that must buy and sell stocks and bonds or perhaps real estate. It will have to trade, buy, and sell these things at tiny increments and at extremely fast rates but to get a human owner to sign for these would be prohibitive so we will have to allow robots to be able to own some property, shares, stocks, and commodities, like other robots.
I think the most logical solution would be to get rid of the presumption that rights exist at all. Accept that people are not exceptional or special and that we are just animals that wear pants. Then, move on from there.
We will want machines to have some rights, but we will also want machines to want to belong to us and be loyal to our wishes. Do genies enjoy being slaves to mortals despite having infinite power and intellect because it's just in their nature to enjoy being slaves? We breed snow sledding dogs to derive pleasure from pulling sleds.
