I think all this discussion about "AI replacing developers" ignores one crucial fact imo: many applications that are built today will be completely obsolete when AI has reached widespread adoption. For example, many static websites won't be needed anymore when people interact with information on the web through AI searches and chat bots. Instead, you will need to build APIs and interfaces for the AI to consume. What I'm trying to say is: it's fairly useless to quibble about how today's code will be written with/by AI because that's just a temporary transition phase. Soon software itself will change so much that the necessary skills to produce that software will also change fundamentally. It won't matter whether AI can build a better traditional app than a human developer can because so many apps will likely be replaced by entirely different workflows. People will have to click way fewer buttons and type in fewer forms in the future because they will just tell an AI agent what they want done. Which also means that the demand for people who create and manage AI-driven workflows will increase. We will need more people who can handle data, infrastructure and hardware. "Coding" in itself will be less relevant so it doesn't really matter how good the AI is at doing it. This is bad news for people who mainly like to code for a job, but it's good news for everyone in tech who is flexible and adaptable, because they will be able to switch to a different discipline.
