Because the current technology behind AI has a fundamental limitation: no matter how much the technology improves and no matter how large of a context window we manage to create, it will never be able to infer something beyond the dataset it was trained on.
This means no new technologies will be developed by it, and it will not work nearly as well with newly developed technologies. It also requires direct human oversight even when working with the full context of an existing codebase, because it cannot be fully context aware.
In my opinion and experience, the only developers who should worry about any level of development in the AI space (to all currently employed technologies) are those working at companies that had no business having developers in the first place and would have been better served by a consulting firm that serves similar end function with reduced cost commitment and administrative overhead compared to that of FTEs. That's who AI competes with; Dev shops that build nothing new for companies that have no business running in-house development. AI simply proliferates existing code with alternatives to companies who need nothing more than stuff that already exists and canned building blocks.
Any other company that replaces developers with AI is digging their own grave, disguising layoffs as technological growth within the company, or hiding outsourcing.
TL; DR: current AI tech, and all future developments to current methodologies, cannot not effectively compete with developer roles that build new stuff, only with traditional outsourcing methods like consultancies and overseas shops.
