The cost of raising rhinos is a threat to their existence. A few years ago on a particular wildlife preserve rhinos only had to be guarded by anti-poaching teams 2-3 days per month. For the last year and the foreseeable future, they have to be guarded 24 hours a day every day. Unless something changes, some or all of the private preserves will stop raising rhinos because they will not be able to afford to. Populations may drop faster than they already are if that happens. I am an American who visited South Africa for 6 weeks last summer and the one thing I learned was that the people who are thinking about this are smart, competent, and are highly motivated to save the rhinos. This is not about profiteering. It is a desperate measure for desperate times.
