The key thing to remember when reading these statistics, and I have always said this going back to the first "99%" talk is.. and that's just what can be definitely proven with a paper trail. If you could manage to peer into all the money that 1% is hiding, doesn't have a paper trail, then you'd get an even bleaker image.
Also, another thing to remember is that, in the US at least, the 1% is not really the problem. The problem is the 1% of 1%, the .01%. Most of the 1% in the US are not the oligarchy. They are just really successful people. Many of them even worked for what they have. A majority is still "old money," but that's just the way it goes. No one can deny it's an inheritance society.
Oxfam has been tracking this issue of system inequality and have been putting out a number for the past 3 years or so. The number is the amount of people, individuals (and no I don't mean corporations, they are NOT people), who have the same wealth as the poorest half of the world's population, the poorest 3.5 Billion people. Last year it was something like 84. This year it's 62.
Think about that. You can easily visualize 62 people. 62 people fit on a London bus with room to spare. Now try to imagine 3,500,000,000 people. It's so far beyond the Dunbar number you can't even begin to imagine that many people. That in a nutshell is systemic inequality and that is biggest social problem of today.
