As a New Yorker I can't say I blame Germany, we just banned fracking here. The agriculture industry here was a huge proponent of the ban, there are over 550 wineries and microbrews so clean water is kind of a big deal here.
As far as the Russia issue goes, what's the alternative? Say you take away their main revenue source, then you have a volatile country with nukes. A poor Russia is not good for Europe.
