The issue with saying there are a lot of things wrong on both sides as a way to hold them equally accountable for their downsides is that this is an argument that predominantly serves ai advocates.
The current situation of the discussion around generative ai in art is that it is already abundantly clear where the huge issues with that form of ai are. Ai bros are aware of it just as artists are. The whole argumentative base from which ai bros attempt to argue *_is_* to raise their side to a (morally) equal level in whatever way possible. *_That_* is the entire goal they are trying to accomplish. Because once the ai picture commission scene is viewed as equally valid as the art scene, the art scene is, at that very moment, automatically losing its validity.
We cannot say that just because both sides have foul actors that both sides are automatically to be blamed in the same manner. The severity matters, as does the context and the respective goal that drives the actions.
