These are not quite brute force programs though. The "understanding" if these jokes is sort of emergent I think.
I also think it should be pointed out that these chat bots have read way more than you, and have more storage as well. His bit on the number of connections in the brain vs adjustable parameters in the algorithms seems like a moot point to me because of this. The connections tell the bot what to do with that vast amount of info!
What I learned in my PhD program (condensed matter physics): the smartest people can make sense out of the least amount of information. It is not necessary they know the most!
