Many of the top researchers in the field of computer science believe AI x-risk is a real problem, including Nobel prize winners Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield, the most cited computer scientist of all time Yoshua Bengio, and even the inventor of AI and the modern computer Alan Turing. "Peter Thiel and his acolytes" are accelerationists and explicitly opposed to AI safety, so I'm not sure why you would bother to bring him up unless you were very confused about the subject.
