Ehhh but, we don't really understand how life or consciousness emerge. The stuff that makes up our body used to be gas in a star billions of years ago, until eventually it exploded out and formed a lifeless ball of magma, which eventually cooled down and life emerged from it along with increasing complexity. If life can emerge from matter, and consciousness from the electrical neural activity in our brains, who's to say it can't emerge in a computer that is also composed of matter and has an electric neural network as a "brain"? Sounds like the stuff of science fiction but, the truth is we really don't know and can't discount the possibility.
