Yeah I think this is a potential issue. Devs ability to build innovate software will erode in certain areas if AI handles all the “boiler plate” a lot of modern tools exist to improve the developer experience. If anything AI aims to eliminate that entire sector of the market. At least with the current wave of “AI-empowered developers”.
Quite far removed from the glory of automating some of these things yourself of startups built to make processes easier for devs. Not sure that’s a net benefit in the long run.
Interchangeable parts and assembly lines mostly just resulted in cars getting to market faster and more after market fixers (mechanics) of various quality. While the few who got to continue to build and design the stuff dwindled in number and now every vehicle is virtually the same particularly within the same organization.
If anything the current movement is to continue to reduce bespoke interesting solutions until everyone settles on the same “best practice” mode. If security ever gets meaningfully solved the job will likely be significantly more boring. And the average dev will probably be much much worse in individual capability.
