You are wrong with your assumptions. One big part of any autonomous tech is exactly to prevent accidents like this. To simply ignore movement on the left lane is a way too simplified thinking how the software and hardware if these systems work. If you watch some videos about the tech, you will see that it is capable of "seeing" and calculating/predicting the movement of multiple objects at the same time. Even Volvo's City Safety pedestrian detector would have prevented or at least lessen the impact.
