I wouldn't say AI started as a lie. It started in science fiction as a central theme in many books and films such as I,Robot (nothing to do with movie), 2001, 2010, Terminator. It is a very lofty goal. Unfortunately, it was built up in the national conscience to the point it could be easily exploited by any technology promising to get us to what is now termed ASI. People wanted to believe, and so they did.
