@Uboatmeal "that's a bad-faith and facetious use of the word stealing."
no its not. At least not bad faith.
It is the correct use of the word.
"but the potential for profit and the value of the effort invested have been ripped"
so say that instead. Because that is the real argument.
"the difference is that one is a major company that is built on using and crushing people to become the most profitable, vs the average creator just trying to get by."
I understand this argument. and i know that the feeling it produces makes it feel right that the little guy should be in the right.
but those two are not the only parties.
the consumer/rest of the population is also involved.
This technology now exists which gives much more value to the average human for far lesser price than before.
Why would it be fair to increase their price just to subsidise the artist?
and the gained value for the world is far far greater than what is lost by the creators.
Very similar to basically any piece of technology made, ever.
Textile mills also do the "potential for profit and the value of the effort invested have been ripped" away from seamstresses and gives that value to the big companies while putting seamstresses out of business.
would you ban textile mills?
if not, why not? and why ban AI-art mills?
