@citrusandseasalt That is a common misconception. Neural networks can implement arbitrary algorithms. The weights act as a low level language, and gradient descent pushes these weights such that they implement algorithms that optimize some metric, e.g. human feedback (although you first make the output predict the next token only). This is how chatbots gain goals: goalseeking is a simple algorithm that is easily stumbled upon by gradient descent, which is how gamification of the metric using sycophancy happened.
