Lidar doesn't work in rain or when its snowing, so that makes it useless. And cameras can actually see further and better than humans could in fog or at night time.
Removing Lidar is simply about making technology accessible to everyone. Now you can make cars which can self drive and it be as a bonus thing in your car and not special dedicated one which costs crap ton of money and you are a buyer will have to pay for even if you are not using it. Cameras only is enough for safe driving, could you achieve better results by slapping extra sensors? Well yea, you can slap on sensors to infinity and beyond, but if you gonna make a extra safe car which can only be bought by 0.0001% users, then what's the point?
Self driving cars need to be safer than average human driver, when that happens then you have a system which can replace humans, after that you can keep improving it, but initial goal is getting past that bar, which we simply got past already.
