That's the LIDAR not sonar, which is used for side lanes if at all. It's clear the system failed in many ways. Even if the woman was crossing illegally, these autonomous vehicles are supposed to be state of the art safety. They need to see farther ahead and to the sides and not make mistakes in recognition tasks like this one clearly did.
