Doesn't matter. The for-profit companies are allowed to fund public research. They went about it in the correct, legal channels. This is not foul play, this is you mad that something you hate is allowed. And it's not "monopolized" since anyone can use it.
Honestly your post is really poorly informed. Deepfakes have already existed for a while and nobody in their right mind would think "flooding with AI generated images" would work.
