@DOne-ci1jg Sure. Gary Marcus, like Fodor/Pinker/Chomsky etc, is a long-time proponent of the need for symbolic representations, (old-fashioned AI) critiquing neural nets as not being able to do this and that. But now that they are more or less doing everything that was supposed to require symbol manipulation, he has reinvented himself as an expert on the dangers of the technology. It’s a slick move, but if you’ve been following him for 30 years, it’s entirely disingenuous. He wrote in 2018, amongst many other things, that “deep learning is hitting a wall”, exactly when it was about to go through the roof. My assessment of him is that he has his own niche in the marketplace of ideas, and is an interesting guy, but he has shown himself repeatedly to be wrong about these methods. I think he is included in the Senate hearing as the “AI critic” because those technically competent to speculate on the risks (you know who they are) would actually cause a surreal hair-raising scenario.
