We have to start with the premise that an LLM never has any connection whatsoever to actual meaning of a piece of text. It simply not "bootstrap" the meaning. It can only bootstrap to recognize patterns. So when an LLM outputs patterns like "I'm a failure", this does NOT "mean" to the LLM what it means to us. We imagine someone lowering their head into their hands, speaking in a trembling voice, someone *thinking* anxious thoughts and *feeling* all the physiological reactions of anxiety, etc. etc. We can connect to that. We project the same thing into the words an LLM produces. So the "alien" idea is not that bad, but it is misleading because it feeds into the uncanny valley experience we are already having. But the uncanny valley does not mean that a creepy animation is something that is almost alive.
