It's cheaper, for now, because that's the capitalism playbook - offer a new service at a cheap price or even for free, attract a big customer base, buy your competitors (or put them out of business) to make your customers dependent on you, then increase your prices and reduce the quality of your service as much as you possibly can to maximize profit margins. This is exactly how Uber took taxi services out of the picture. Now that there are no taxis, Uber is able to raise your the cost of your ride to work by $50 whenever they want to ("surge pricing") because they know you have no other choice.
