At one point, I believe it was Mitchell but might have been LeCun, said that corporations do not pose an existential threat. I thought that was a pretty absurd statement given we are currently facing multiple existential threats due to corporations, and more than one of these existential threats was brought up during this very debate.
It's also worth noting that corporations are limited to the vicinity of human intelligence due to the fact that they're composed of agents that are no smarter than humans. They are smarter than any one human, but their intelligence is still bounded by human intelligence. AI lacks this limitation, and its performance is scaling very quickly these days. Since 2012 the performance of the state of the art AI systems has increased by more than 10x every single year, and there is no sign of that slowing down any time soon.
