In reality LLMs are excellent at communication. Voice too. That's their job. The second 'L' in LLM is "Language".
What you experience is not a modern AI, but some primitive software from 20 years ago. I happened to work on such a project in 2003, we used extremely primitive AI and tiny data sets. Still worked fine in most cases.
