Even now cyclists wear reflective gear and while it's not common to see it on pedestrians, workers on or by the road also wear them. I don't think we should ever have something that's mandated and enforced, but a similar tech that emits some kind of signal to the nearing AI vehicles will for sure be something every sane cyclist will want to wear. And maybe a few overly cautious pedestrians, since I expect it to be as effective even when not visible (over the clothes).
Pedestrians even now don't really have to use designated crossings, that is unless they wish to minimize the chance of being accidentally hit.
And doesn't your last sentence seem silly when you think about it. I mean, you could say the same for (non-autonomous) driving as well, period. Yet, we have it, and we have lot's of it. There probably isn't an easy way to know for sure how many people in the world was killed on that same day, but I assure you, that's simply because that's so common it isn't news anymore. Or else we wouldn't be hearing anything else on the news other than *local* obituaries.
