In a society based on consumerism, people are just a function of a factory.
A factory must never stop to produce, thats why we went from a needs based society, to a desire based one.
There must never be an end to new products, and consumers must constantly desire more and new things.
Thats why we have an entire industry created to make us desire "stuff": new fashions, better technology, etc.
Its a cycle. As soon as one element flies out of the window (jobs), it will all end and transcend into something different. Less people will be needed, and currency might become obselete (money is just a more convenient form of barter).
What will be needed in this new world is computing power for the AI to run, energy to power the machines, and ressources. But not people as consumers.
