While I fully agree with you about art technically being a non-essential to human existence, I would like to point out that, in our current society, "Artist" does not necessarily translate to "Portrait Painter" anymore. They do exist, and some make it work if they're unique, but it is not common anymore. What about entertainment? While again, I agree that they are not life-saving, they're not surgeons, scientists, or various doctors furthering the advancement of society, but what about the things that breathe life into a very work-filled, often times cruel, mundane world? Even those in STEM deserve a break, and many find it in things like Anime and games. Artists make up teams on TV shows and movies, even live action (Concept and storyboard) But especially Video Games, Anime, Cartoons, Animated movies, and fashion. These artists are not famous, they are just workers like anyone else, building a world that people can enjoy. Some roles include: Concept artist, Background artist, layout artist, prop artist, 3D moddlers, 3D rigging, Rough Animators, Clean up animators, Architects, Compositing Artist (VFX), lighting artist, 3D animators, storyboarding. These teams need varied artists to function, the roles cannot just be replaced with "one fits all" or computer programmers, those jobs are delegated to putting it all together when the artists pass it down the pipeline. No artists = no anime, no cartoons, no video games. Even real live-action has storyboarders and Concept artists. But if your point is solely to say they are non-essential for simply surviving, then, yes, you are correct. They are luxury. But if someone in STEM needs a break, they may turn to a beautiful video game to find a bit of joy, fun, and appreciate the beauty of a good story. The Video Game industry is booming, and the indsutry demand for artists is increasing. Artists make the world brighter, so that people like surgeons can keep saving lives. AI will become a tool for those very same artists to speed up their process. They will not become obsolete, they will become enhanced. And I say this as an artist who greatly aspires to get into concept art one day, I love gaming. I'm currently working as a Layout/BG artist for animation, and I have high hopes for the tech. :)
