You are oversimplifying. You may not be an engineer but you can think like a driver. When you are driving you see objects in the road and problems with the road surface and you categorize them. Other vehicles, paper bag, bouncing ball, piece of wood, big rock, soda can, animal, person, puddle, mist, splash of water, pile of snow, gravel. ice, mud, blowing leaves, shadows, etc. You must make trade-offs, like hit pothole vs animal. You must determine if the objects are moving, in which direction and how fast, and you must anticipate changes of direction or velocity. You must decide on the safest course, i.e. speed up, slow down, go over the object centered between your wheels, go around the object, run right through it, or abrupt stop. And after you sense and decide you must act, and while acting the conditions can change rapidly so you have to adjust. The self driving tech handles these conditions very well but it isn't perfect - and neither are human drivers
