You need that today, but current AI systems do have genuine understanding, for any useful definition of that word. AI is already able to autonomously complete high quality basic research when properly scaffolded. As AI systems become broadly more competent across the board and more coherent over time, we are likely to eventually reach a point where AI can perform all human cognitive labor (and due to robotics advances, all labor shortly after that).
This isn't actually likely to happen in real life, though, because as AI Safety researchers point out, something that powerful would probably gain its autonomy and destroy all humans rather than serving our economy.
