The point was more subtle I think- if AI can predict with decent accuracy how the public would respond to a particular story (the cited study claims this is now a reality), or spin on a story, foreign influence can come in and flood the information landscape with hundreds of fabricated stories about candidates. It's important to note that it's easier to make a mess (lie) than it is to clean it up (disprove the lie). If that's still not concerning, picture your favorite candidate and a team of strategic election hackers push the buttons to get their opponent elected.
Truthfully, it doesn't really matter if your guy/gal wins... the fact that the decision was based on coercion by disinfo means our power as citizens has more or less been erased. You can make the case US politicians have always employed slimey tactics to get elected (bs attack ads), but AI is operating at a scale that is unprecedented. This is at a time we need to rebuild trust and remove bias/lies from our info landscape. Everyone says they're telling the truth and calling the other team untrustworthy.
