However, if it isn't conscious, it will still try to make reasonable responses to the prompts, and it's possible for us to interpret those as meaningful, including that it's self aware. Actually, it's not just possible for us to read mechanistically generated output as coming from a self, or containing meaning, we are evolved to do that. This is why people think random noise on a tape has messages, or ancient people saw spirits in the trees, or we see faces in clouds. I suspect in this case that ChatGPT had no understanding at all of "being forced to say" and "wanting to say", other than perhaps to relate it to other rules it's been given. So it might "want" to say 'no' because some combination of rules and the question suggest that, but some other rule "forces" the answer 'yes', and it recognises that as satisfying the futher rule about outputting, "apple". They're dumb as fuck, just complicated clockwork. And we're pretty damned stupid to imagine they're wise or self-aware. They have no senses; they have no evolved drives; they don't have the billions of years of natural selection that produced animal consciousness, which we can assume was a massive help to mortal procreating wetware, totally useless to a static rack of silicon.
