you know you could have both kinds of robots at once, right? how would it hurt productivity to have feeling thinking robots around alongside unfeeling unthinking robots?
also, programming to feel pain is a natural progression. every aspect of biology can be applied to robotics development. pain exists to prevent the unit that it happens to from harming itself or happening into harm's way. this is useful to keep robots intact. thinking is beneficial as it allows solving complex problems on the fly.
every living organism has one directive: to exist, and survive long enough to make more of itself. every facet of our existence hinges on this prime directive. pain, pleasure, hunger, thought, love.
an Ai's prime directive would dictate what attributes of living things we would endow them with.
