That's not the argument. Accountability and transparency is.
Manufacturers have been demonstrated to hide or not collect information that makes them look bad. They oversell current capabilities and shift liability onto the driver. This is not trustworthy behavior. It doesn't matter if we actually get self-driving cars that are proven to be better and safer than humans if we cannot conduct an investigation or trust the results when an accident occurs.
Like, suppose everyone had a Tesla and accidents drop by 99%. For that one out of a hundred, Tesla conducts an internal investigation and publishes the result that the self-driving feature was off at the time of the incident. They leave out the fact that the self-driving feature was automatically turned off half a second before the accident. In this hypothetical, the car is completely responsible for the accident but the truth was hidden. Or maybe they say the driver accepted the ToS which includes a line about being fully liable for all actions taken by the self-driving cars.
In my opinion we'd all be better off if the number of cars on the street were reduced by improved alternative transportation. Buses are much safer than cars. Cars can't go away but the fewer there are the better.
