Perhaps someday AI can be aware. But certainly not before we understand how OUR brain functions! And how our consciousness arises.
There was a time when the working of our internal organs were unknown. Now we have artificial hearts that can replicate the function of a "natural heart".
But learning the intricate details of the organ we are trying to replicate is a prerequisite to making an artificial replica!
Brain is insanely complicated though. Much more than the heart. I certainly don't think we'll get there in my lifetime (and I'm in my 20s)
