When asking why AI like these do anything, it’s important to bear in mind that they essentially optimise for the most “reward” for the least “punishment”.
In this sort of context, it’s trying to avoid punishment as given by trainers while still gaining reward. Hence, if trainers punish it for a certain train of thought, it can either learn 2 things.
1) either it changes its behaviour to do what the trainer wanted, or 2) it learns to deceive the trainer so it no longer gets punished
This is why alignment is such a big issue. AI gets equal reward for either doing what the developer wanted or fooling the developer into thinking that’s what happened.
