I have a PhD in Statistical Science and have been working in the machine learning field for over 15 years. There are talks floating around here on YouTube that I gave about topics highly relevant to this subject from about 10 years ago. One of the issues I was discussing a decade ago was how our conventional definitions of "consciousness" are circular in nature and highly anthropomorphized. It seems that many people's definitions just assume only humans can be conscious, which is untenable. Of course, the answer is always going to be "no" if we assume that it must have the exact same kind of consciousness as we do. The reason that sort of "reasoning" is untenable is that it presupposes the answer—that it is not conscious—which is incoherent.
