Oh this is a really good take to have, because it fixes one fundamental flaw with the soullessness argument.
Only calling AI art "soulless" leaves the opening of a potential future in which the machine may achieve that benchmark of seeming to have soul. But taking this angle, which honestly also just seems more accurate to me since it doesn't rely on something so abstract to be understandable, makes the AI ever reaching this standard a categorical impossibility. At least in the generalizable function of these models, which compile, mix and return sets of existing data without a unique perspective of its own (...wait, dangit, you could argue that the AI's definition of "accuracy" could be said to be that unique perspective), these programs won't ever really be able to mimic the effect of just a single artist's soul at the heart of the process to get the results.
As I've realized right there, the goalposts are still subjective with this argument, but I'd say they are at least less so than when trying to attribute "a soul" to any given piece of art.
