In fact, just to add, if you get CONSENT from artists, or pay those artists to use their work to train an AI, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that in the slightest, especially if the consent from the artist is enthusiastic/genuinely interested in the complex field of AI themselves. AI can be a powerful, useful tool that can aid human artists or aid human artists that live in the world differently than most, AI isn’t evil, it’s a tool that needs perfecting, just like a chisel, just like a paintbrush, just like a charcoal pencil. But what the chisel, brush and pencil all have in common is that the individuality of the human hands make the piece; even referenced, no two human drawings will ever be identical. Statistically, that level of individuality on a machine is significantly more improbable in this current stage in time and that’s okay. AI needs room to grow and learn, but stealing work to train them from artists that aren’t consenting out of spite? It’s giving an incredibly useful and important tool a terrible reputation, which will hinder its growth and integration into the wider art community.
