We've had flying cars for decades, but we don't use them because they aren't actually a good idea.
Anyway, half of all published AI researchers say there is a significant chance of human extinction from AI, as do the 3 most cited AI scientists and the guys who wrote the standard textbook on AI. This is taken very seriously by very serious people.
