Apple's recent "The illusion of thinking" paper lends weight to the growing realization that simply scaling generative pretrained transformers and chain of thought models won't cross the chasm to AGI. The best models currently suffer a total collapse when tasked with quite trivial problems such as the towers of hanoi, even when they are told the algorithms to solve it.
