Idk about the chatgpt thing, but AI image generation can't really be compared to artists. From what I understand, AI image generation is more like taking art, cutting it up and gluing it back together to fit keywords you were given. While I guess it is something new, it is new in the same way as if you ate multiple things and threw them up. It certainly is different than what it used to be! You shouldn't be proud of yourself as if you came up with the ideas for the foods you ate just because of that, though.
Getting inspired by other's art is more like eating something you like, and then trying to make it by yourself, or only making some parts of it and adding your own things:3
