I very much agree with you - and have long implemented this approach - that generative ai's art gets increasingly interesting when you make it use more of its own "imagination."
I don't find the current models' knack for realism all that compelling. This is of course entirely subjective, but I really like making the ai dig deep into its vast network of associations, in an attempt to generate something which has never been seen before, or maybe a combination of things which would never happen naturally. I also have an aesthetic preference towards the darker, or more obscure, or abstract, bizarre. The best model for this imo is Disco Diffusion. If you haven't used that one, and you have any similar tastes, I strongly suggest looking into and exploring the Disco model..
