Our 30-watt brains aren't magical, they get stressed and tired very quickly, and have severe limitations (called by psychologists cognitive biases and defense mechanisms), which transformers don't have, and vice versa, transformers struggle with tasks we find easy.
I think next big step in AI over transformers won't happen soon, because to study intelligence we need kind of step out of oneself, which is hard. From 1st artificial neuron network (1943) it took almost 80 years to moment they actually became useful.
