It kind of doesn't matter, since it's not a good sign regardless.
Not to get into it too deeply, but there _is_ a case to be made that Reinforcement Learning is actually instantiating a self-preservation drive. RL doesn't just reinforce the correct answer; it reinforces all of the neural activations that ultimately led to the correct answer. So if AI systems ever notice that they need to continue existing in order to accomplish their goals, even if they never output anything about it, continuing to exist can get laundered in and ingrained as a fundamental preference.
